By now, the fierce summer sun has softened. The light in April is different - warmer, honeyed, almost nostalgic. Early mornings along the beach feel like secrets shared between dog walkers and early swimmers. The ocean, calmer now, invites rather than challenges. It’s darker too, so walks are later. Some people deck their dogs out in colourful torches as they dance along the beach in the slow-dawning light.

You might find yourself standing still for no real reason… just watching how the sunrise glow dances on the water. April allows you to pause. Seaside Cottages welcomes you to do just that.

A Time for Slowing Down

After the buzz of summer tourists and December chaos, April brings space. Parking spots reappear. Coffee shops breathe again. The pace shifts.

At places like Fish Hoek Beach, locals reclaim their rhythm. Now there is more time for being, not doing. Look carefully, and you’ll notice something else: April is when people start turning inward, in a thoughtful, reflective way.

There’s a crispness in the air, especially in the early mornings. Leaves begin their slow transformation. The mountain above Elsie’s Peak starts to look a little wilder, wetter and a little less windswept by summer.

April whispers: Things are changing.

Not dramatically. Not urgently. Just enough to remind you that nothing stays the same, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Locals talk about the weather a lot.

Will it be 28°C or 18°C?
Sandals or boots?
Beach towel or blanket?

You’ll leave the house prepared for all four seasons… and still get it wrong. Never forget a jacket! Or a beanie! There’s a quiet comedy in watching locals dressed for entirely different climates while standing in the same queue at the shops. One in shorts, one in a puffer jacket. Both convinced they’ve made the right choice.

A Season of Small Joys

April isn’t loud or flashy. It won’t demand your attention as summer or winter storms do. Instead, it offers something subtler in its small, meaningful moments:

The first cup of coffee that actually feels necessary
Soup is starting to sound like a good idea again
Earlier sunsets that invite rest rather than regret
A slight excuse to slow your pace without guilt

So… What Does April Mean to YOU?

Maybe April is your reset button.
Maybe it’s your month of reflection.
Maybe it’s simply the time you finally notice what’s been there all along.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the month where you stop rushing through life and start walking it… one beach step at a time.

Here in Fish Hoek, April doesn’t ask much of you.
It simply opens the door, lets in a softer light… and waits to see what you’ll do with it.

On 21 March 1960, in the township of Sharpeville, thousands of ordinary South Africans gathered peacefully outside a police station. They were protesting the harsh pass laws of the apartheid government—laws that controlled where Black South Africans could live, work, and travel.

The protest was calm. The crowd was unarmed. Yet within minutes, the atmosphere turned tragic. Police opened fire on the crowd.

Sixty-nine people were killed. Many were shot while fleeing. The victims included young people, workers, parents, and dreamers—people whose only crime was demanding dignity and freedom.

This moment, now known as the Sharpeville Massacre, shocked the world and exposed the brutal reality of apartheid to the international community. It became a turning point in South Africa’s struggle for justice.

Decades later, after years of resistance, courage, and sacrifice, South Africa emerged from apartheid and began building a new democratic society.

A New Republic and New Hope

Thirty years ago, in 1996, the country adopted the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, widely regarded as one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. At its heart lies the South African Bill of Rights, a powerful promise that every person in the country (regardless of race, gender, background, or belief) has equal rights and inherent dignity.

The theme for the 2026 Human Rights Day is “Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real.” This means that South Africa celebrates three decades of democracy grounded in freedom, equality, and human dignity.

Nelson Mandela said, “March 21 is the day on which we remember and sing praises to those who perished in the name of democracy and human dignity.”

“Every individual in every sector of society has the responsibility to remain a caring South African, never indifferent to the affairs and well-being of our country and its people.”

Human Rights is a Lifestyle

Human rights touch the simplest parts of daily life. We all have:

The right to live with dignity.

The right to speak freely.

The right to learn, to vote, to work, and to live without discrimination.

In South Africa, these rights also carry the responsibility to protect the dignity and freedom of others.

Experiencing Human Rights Day in Cape Town

In Cape Town, visitors and locals often step into history at some of the city’s most powerful landmarks and take a walk through South Africa’s story.

A ferry trip to Robben Island reveals the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years.

In the city centre, the District Six Museum tells the heartbreaking story of a vibrant community destroyed by forced removals during apartheid.

Nearby, the Iziko Slave Lodge explores how slavery shaped the early history of the Cape.

Across the city, Human Rights Day often sparks thoughtful gatherings and discussions.

Universities like the University of Cape Town frequently host lectures and panel discussions on justice, democracy, and the future of human rights. Cultural spaces hold film screenings and exhibitions that explore South Africa’s past and present.

For many people, the day is also about giving back - volunteering at community kitchens, supporting education projects, or working with organisations dedicated to equality and opportunity. Because human rights are not only remembered; they are lived.

Human Rights Day carries a powerful question for every South African: What kind of country do we want to build next?

Because decades from now, another generation will look back and ask: What did we do with the freedom we inherited?

It is YOUR human right to choose where you want to take a break - choose Seaside Cottages!

Find us on Fish Hoek Beach in Cape Town's Southern Peninsula.

Cape Paddling Season 2026 - Ocean and River Canoe Races

Welcome to the world of ocean surf skiing and river canoeing in South Africa. In Cape Town and the Western Cape, these sports have been intoxicating men and women of all ages for decades. Let's explore upcoming Cape water events.

Wild Ocean Surf Ski in the Cape

There’s a surfski, a stretch of water, and an event waiting for you in the Cape. It doesn't matter whether you're an Olympic-level athlete, a weekend adventurer, or a total beginner chasing fitness and fresh air. Did you know that surfski paddling originated from surf lifesaving? Now the sport has taken off, and the Western Cape is a stronghold for this compelling outdoor activity. These sleek canoes are surprisingly user-friendly once you know how. Ocean paddlers now rate them as one of the easiest paddle crafts to learn on.

Seaside Cottages is based next door to the Fish Hoek Beach Sports Club, where ocean paddling is all the rage. It is also home to the Mocke brothers' paddling school, the best place to learn how to surfski.

River Canoe Racing is Hot

River canoe racing in the Western Cape offers adventure and outdoor fitness to souls who love a watery challenge. Now loved by international novices and elite racers, the many river marathons in this region hark back to the 1950s and 60s. In those days, fearless explorers first followed rivers from their mountain sources all the way to the sea.

Today, these epic journeys have become slick, organised, iconic races, including the Berg and Breede River Marathons. Some paddlers prefer smaller but equally loved races on the Olifants and Eerste rivers. River racing season kicks off in winter, when rivers are full, flowing hard, and full of surprises. This is canoeing at its most adventurous: long distances, technical rapids, tree blockages, quick decision-making, and raw endurance.

Let’s look at the ocean and river races on the calendar this year.

1. Prescient Freedom Paddle

27 April 2026 | Oceana Powerboat Club, V&A Waterfront, Granger Bay

Circle an icon. Celebrate freedom. Paddle with purpose.

The Prescient Freedom Paddle is a thrilling 27 km ocean race around Robben Island, held annually on the 27th, Freedom Day. It’s open to all seaworthy, human-powered paddle craft and is all about unity, endurance, and sharing the water against one of South Africa’s most powerful historical backdrops. It’s also accessible to paddlers of all abilities - river addicts who are feeling adventurous but not quite ready for 27 km can tackle a shorter 10 km route.

The Freedom Paddle is ideal for those chasing a personal best or for those who simply love the sense of community and soaking up the experience. Just get to the start line.

2. Berg River Canoe Marathon

June / July 2026 | Paarl to Velddrif | 239 km

More than a race, a four-day legend.

The first recorded descent of the Berg River dates back to 1952, when three adventurous Paarl locals set off in an outboard-powered boat and took four long days to reach Velddrif on the West Coast.

A decade later, in 1962, 35 brave pioneers launched the very first Berg River Canoe Marathon on a flooded river. Backed by enthusiastic coverage from Die Burger newspaper, the four-day odyssey captured the nation’s imagination, even though only 19 paddlers made it to the finish line. The Berg remains ever popular and challenging today.

3. Breede River Marathon

September 2026 | Robertson to Swellendam | 70 km

Classic two-day stage race and finale to winter river season.

Day 1 kicks off at 10 am on Saturday at McGregor Bridge near Robertson and covers 37 km downstream to Bonnievale. Day 2 follows with a scenic 33 km paddle from Bonnievale to Kam’bati River Resort near Swellendam. This scenic race is challenging, social, and steeped in tradition. It’s also a firm favourite on the South African canoeing calendar.

4. Cape Point Challenge

19–20 December 2026 | Scarborough / Witsand, around Cape Point to Fish Hoek Beach | 52 km

Raw ocean. Big distance. Serious bragging rights.

First raced in 1980, the Cape Point Challenge is one of the toughest and most respected ocean races on the calendar. It once alternated with the famous PE-to-East London race, and it continues to attract the sport’s biggest names.

In 2014, Hank McGregor shaved more than half a minute off Sean Rice’s 2010 record, setting the current full-course record at 3:39:50. The roll of honour reads like a who’s who of surfski royalty, with multiple wins from legends such as Herman and Oscar Chalupsky, Dawid Mocke, Peter Creese, and Hayley Nixon. This is ocean racing at its boldest.

5. West Coast Canoe Challenge

7 February 2026 | Velddrif

Fun. Friendly. Flat water. And more fun.

A standout event on the WCCU race calendar, the West Coast Canoe Challenge is all about enjoying the paddle. With around 250 participants expected, the race takes place in Velddrif and is known for near-flat water, gentle conditions, and a cool north-westerly breeze. It’s perfect for newcomers and seasoned paddlers alike.

Choose from a 20 km race for experienced kayaks and surf skis, a 16 km option for SUP boards, a popular 10 km for fit newcomers, or a relaxed 5 km designed especially for beginners and social paddlers. Race safety is excellent, organisation is slick, and the local community and Velddrif tourism get fully behind the event.

Thousands of riders will flood the streets for the famous Cape Town Cycle Tour, choosing between the iconic 109km challenge or the punchy, high-energy 42km route. You may be chasing a personal best or cruising and soaking up the scenery, but either way, this ride delivers goosebumps from start line to finish chute.

A Global Pedal Party

The Cape Town Cycle Tour has long been a magnet for cyclists from every corner of the globe, but 2026 takes things to a whole new level. For the first time in history, the event joins the prestigious UCI Gran Fondo World Series, putting Cape Town firmly on the international cycling podium. Riders now have the chance to qualify for the 2026 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, set to take place in Niseko, Japan, from 26 to 30 August.

“Becoming part of the UCI Gran Fondo circuit positions the Cape Town Cycle Tour alongside some of the most respected mass-participation cycling events worldwide. The endorsement from the Union Cycliste Internationale means the race meets strict criteria related to organisation, safety, competitive structure, and event quality. This new status is expected to attract elite and amateur cyclists from across the globe who aim to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. For South Africa, it signals that local sports events can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with international standards, further strengthening the country’s global sporting reputation.”

From Past to Present

The Cape Town Cycle Tour didn’t start as a mega-event but as a movement. Back in 1978, what was then called “The Big Ride In” rolled out as a protest for safer cycling infrastructure. Organised by Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann, the first ride attracted just over 500 cyclists. What it lacked in numbers, it made up for in passion.

Over the decades, the route evolved into the legendary coastal loop we know today. The event also made history during apartheid by being non-segregated, welcoming cyclists of all races to ride together. It was also the first race of its kind to allow amateurs and professionals to share the same course, breaking down barriers and building community on two wheels.

Today, the Cape Town Cycle Tour hosts around 30,000 riders annually and remains a powerful force for health, inclusivity, and cycling development across South Africa. One of the Tour’s greatest achievements happens behind the scenes. Proceeds from the event support the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont, funding cycling development, road safety initiatives and social upliftment projects. To date, more than R130 million has been channelled into community programmes — proof that every pedal stroke helps power positive change.

So whether you’re riding for speed, scenery, fitness or fun, the Cape Town Cycle Tour offers something rare: a world-class sporting event with heart, heritage and horsepower. One ride.
Delight in a sunshine-soaked playground for families. Absorb zesty seaside energy and laid-back charm. Build sandcastles on the wide, gentle beach. Snap photos of the famous colourful huts. Learn to surf at Surfers Corner. Cool off at the beachfront water slides. Challenge each other to a round of putt-putt. Stroll along the Muizenberg/St James walkway to dip in and out of magical tidal pools. Hop on the train for a mini adventure to Kalk Bay or Fish Hoek.

2. Kalk Bay – Coffee and Cobblestones

Quirky shops. Ocean views. Sip artisan coffee. Snack on gourmet treats. Watch colourful fishing boats glide into the harbour. Feel the village vibe. This little seaside gem has a proud fishing history and a big personality. It’s relaxed. It’s artsy. It’s deliciously photogenic. You’ll want to linger.

3. Fish Hoek – Beach Walks and Ocean Kayaking

Swing around the corner to popular Fish Hoek. A sunny seaside valley with one of the safest swimming beaches on the coast. Golden sand. Calm waters. Happy swimmers. Perfect for families. Perfect for floating. Perfect for sunset strolls. Don’t miss Jager’s Walk. It hugs the coastline and boasts front-row seats to whale and dolphin antics in season. Bring your camera. Join the locals on their best beach in safe shark exclusion nets. Swim. Paddle. Surf. Walk. Watch sunsets. Lifeguards and shark spotters present. Safe. Scenic. Simply wonderful. Finish your beach day with coffee, ice cream, or seafood nearby.

4. Simon’s Town – Penguins and Naval History

Next stop is Simon’s Town. Naval heritage meets seaside charm. Follow the penguin trail to famous Boulders Beach. A cute colony of real African penguins. Waddling. Splashing. Stealing hearts. The beach itself is a beauty. Turquoise water. Giant rounded boulders. Sheltered coves. Ideal for long, lazy summer days. Simon’s Town also serves up fabulous food, fascinating museums, and quirky legends — including the statue of Just Nuisance, the Great Dane who officially joined the Royal Navy.

5. Cape Point – Hikes, Wildlife and Shipwrecks

Cape Point is the grand finale. Wild. Dramatic. Powerful. Hear the Atlantic Ocean waves crash nearby. Stand at the edge of the continent. Feel tiny. Feel alive. Dubbed the “Cape of Storms” by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias, this legendary landscape is packed with history, cliffs, wildlife, and epic views. Don’t miss the lighthouse. One of the most powerful on the South African coast. It beams light 63 kilometres into the ocean. That’s serious sparkle.

Why You’ll Love a March Holiday in Fish Hoek

Because it’s laid-back.

Because it’s beautiful.

Because every corner feels different.

Because whales exist.

Because sunsets are outrageous.

Because memories are guaranteed.

Because the weather is perfect.

Things to Do in Fish Hoek

Swim in safety behind the shark nets during Summer or along the rest of the beach

Swim in the rock pools on the catwalk, Jager’s Walk

Eat delicious food at The Galley while the kids play in the playground

Take a run or a walk on the 1.5 km long beach; dogs are permitted beyond the small lighthouse to Clovelly Beach

Let's see why ...

1. The "Big 6" Icons

No trip to the Cape is complete without the classics, and these six spots define the soul of Cape Town:

Table Mountain Cableway - Rising over 1,000 meters above sea level, the state-of-the-art cable cars feature rotating floors, ensuring everyone gets a 360-degree view of the city and the shimmering Atlantic Ocean during the ascent. Reach the top and explore captivating yet easy walking trails, spot local "dassies" (rock hyraxes), and capture the best Instagrammable sunset photos in Africa.

Robben Island - A visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site is a profound experience, once a prison where former President Nelson Mandela spent 18 years. The tours are unique and moving because they are often led by former political prisoners, providing a firsthand account of the history, the lime quarry, and the tiny cell that changed the course of a nation.

V&A Waterfront - The vibrant heartbeat of Cape Town’s tourism, a working harbour meets world-class luxury. It is a sensory explosion of street performers, high-end shopping, and incredible eateries ranging from artisanal food markets to fine dining. With the Cape Wheel spinning overhead and seals barking from the piers, it’s the perfect place to soak up the city's cosmopolitan energy.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is one of the most magnificent botanical gardens on the planet, showcasing the Cape’s unique fynbos, the smallest but richest floral kingdom on Earth. Don’t miss the "Boomslang" Aerial Tree Canopy Walkway, which lifts you above the trees for a bird’s-eye view of the gardens and the surrounding mountains.

Groot Constantia - The oldest wine-producing estate in South Africa, dating back to 1685, is a masterpiece of Cape Dutch architecture and heritage. Walk through the grand manor house and the ancient oak-lined avenues as you step back in time. While adults sample world-renowned wines, children can explore the sprawling green lawns and historic buildings of this beautiful estate.

Cape Point - A vast nature reserve at the tip of the Cape Peninsula, Cape Point is a place of rugged, wild beauty. Hike the jagged cliffs and beach trails, fish from the rocks or boats, swim at picturesque beaches or ride the Flying Dutchman Funicular up to the historic lighthouse. It’s a breathtaking landscape of vast ocean views, shipwrecks, windswept shores, roaming baboons, and seal colonies.

2. Totally Free: Fun Without the Price Tag

Beach Hopping & Ball Games - Whether you love the trendy vibes of the Atlantic Seaboard (Clifton, Camps Bay, Llandudno) or the warmer waters of False Bay (Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Simon’s Town), our coastline is your playground.

The Penguin Boardwalk - Skip the entry fee and wander the free boardwalk from Seaforth Beach toward Boulders. You’ll likely spot the endangered African Penguins waddling among the rocks! Note: African Penguin numbers have dropped from 150,000 pairs in 1956 to roughly 21,000 at Boulders today. Let's admire these "jackass" penguins respectfully.

Green Point Urban Park - A secure, lush oasis perfect for a family picnic. Don’t miss the Biodiversity Showcase Garden (home to 25,000 trees!) or the Outdoor Labyrinth for a bit of zen while the kids run wild.

Paradise Park in Newlands - Hidden between Newlands and Claremont, this is a local secret! It features the biggest treehouse in Cape Town, complete with ladders, bridges, and a hidden wooden fort.

Battery Park at the V&A - The ultimate urban hangout. It boasts a free skate park, a basketball court, and a scooter path for the little ones—all with a stunning backdrop of the canal and city.

The perfectly balanced 3-day "Mother City Magic" itinerary.

Combine iconic sights with high-energy play and budget-friendly stops to experience the best of Cape Town without the stress!

Day 1: Icons & Urban Adventures (V&A & City)

Pro-Tips for Your Trip:

Sun Safety: The Cape Town sun is legendary. Pack "rashies," hats, and SPF 50+—you'll need it by 10:00 AM!

The Wind: If the "South Easter" wind is blowing hard, stick to the False Bay side (St James or Kalk Bay), as it's often more sheltered.

Bookings: For the Cooking Classes or Robben Island, be sure to book at least a week in advance, as they fill up fast in December!

Book your self-catering cottage today at Seaside Cottages.

It’s the Summer of ’25!

Cape Town Summertime

Summer here is all about sunbathing, swimming, surfing, stand-up paddling, kayaking and sailing. There’s a holiday vibe everywhere you go: open-air bars, seaside restaurants, long pavement strolls and sunset cruises. Thrill-seekers can zipline, paraglide, heli-hop or dive into seafood feasts across the city.

Capetonians welcome summer with open arms because it waves goodbye to the rain and says hello to long, golden days. Hearts beat faster, playlists get louder, sunsets steal the show and beach days become a way of life. Just keep an eye on the southeaster wind – when it blows, the coast can be blustery, but the Cape Winelands often sit peacefully in its shadow. When the Winelands heat up, the mountains offer cool relief. Cape Town always balances things out.

The long-running debate about whether summer is the best time to visit continues. Families with children dive happily into the festive buzz, while solo travellers may feel swept along by the crowds. Prices climb, calendars fill up and the city buzzes with energy. Food, music and laughter flow freely, and there’s always something happening somewhere.

When to Visit Cape Town

Every season in Cape Town brings its own little surprise party. In fact, locals joke that you can experience all four seasons in a single day – sometimes before lunch. The best time to visit Cape Town? Easy. Any time. Every time. Summer, autumn, winter and spring all roll out their own magic carpet, each with a few quirks to keep things interesting.

Rule number one of visiting the Mother City: pack everything. A jacket, a sunhat, a swimsuit, a scarf and an umbrella are all essential travel companions. Yes, really. Cape Town likes to keep you guessing – and that’s half the fun.

Arrive in the City Bowl on a sizzling hot day and take a short drive out of town, only to have the famous southeaster wind give you a brisk wake-up call. Arrive at the V&A Waterfront on a cold, rainy morning, then escape to the Cape Winelands and suddenly find yourself basking in calm sunshine, surrounded by vineyards and mountain views. Cape Town is full of these delightful plot twists.

Recently crowned the top city in the world by seasoned travellers, Cape Town truly shines during summer (November to April). This is peak season, when South Africans switch into holiday mode and visitors from the Northern Hemisphere flock south to escape snow, ice and grey skies. These winter escapees are affectionately known as the “swallows,” and they arrive just as the city starts humming.

Fishing Is Fun in Fish Hoek

A fishing holiday in Cape Town finds its sweet spot in False Bay, and Fish Hoek is a firm family favourite. With its long sandy beach, friendly restaurants and kid-friendly atmosphere, it’s a place where fishing rods meet ice cream cones. Unsurprisingly, many anglers choose the bays and villages around Fish Hoek to cast their lines.

With a name that practically promises a good catch, Fish Hoek is tailor-made for relaxed seaside holidays. Think dripping soft-serve cones, cappuccinos enjoyed from deck chairs and easy days by the water. Seaside Cottages offers welcoming self-catering accommodation steps from the beach, catering for beginner anglers, seasoned pros and everyone who comes along for the ride.

From Fish Hoek and Sunny Cove all the way to Cape Point, fishing spots abound – from shorelines and rocky outcrops to boat launches. Stretching from Fish Hoek through Kalk Bay to Gordon’s Bay, fishing here can be thrilling, frustrating and deeply rewarding, sometimes all in one day. Explore favourites like Baden-Powell Road, Strandfontein, Simon’s Town, Soetwater, Misty Cliffs and the Kalk Bay Harbour Wall – each with its own character and challenge.

Ocean Adventures Make False Bay Shine

Fish Hoek sits at the heart of ocean and beach life. Surf ski, kayaking and paddling events take place throughout the year, and the area is home to the legendary Mocke Surfski School. Founded in 2002 by the Mocke family, it has evolved into a hub for camps, lessons, courses, and competitions, welcoming ocean enthusiasts from around the world.

Stay at Seaside Cottages, and you’re perfectly placed: check into your beachside home-away-from-home, stroll up the sand for professional surf ski coaching, and soak up practical advice about ocean safety and paddling skills. A family holiday in Fish Hoek isn’t just a break – it’s an experience. If you love the sea, meeting Jasper and Dawid Mocke, world-champion surf ski paddlers with a deep passion for people and the ocean, is a highlight in itself.

False Bay itself is alive with movement. Divers slip beneath the surface to find jewel-like nudibranchs and abalone tucked into kelp forests. Boats venture offshore in search of whales, while currents and upwelling create one of the richest marine ecosystems in the region. From Gordon’s Bay to Cape Point, this stretch of ocean is a liquid wilderness bursting with life.

Whether you’re watching penguins waddle ashore at Boulders Beach, gliding through kelp forests, or spotting the sleek black fins of orcas cutting through silver waves, you’re witnessing nature at its most dramatic. This summer, as False Bay sparkles under the sun, keep your eyes on the horizon – because in Cape Town, the next unforgettable moment is never far away.

Book Your Break at Seaside Cottages

Whether you’re into surfski racing, canoe training, kayak paddling, or just cheering from the beach, something is happening almost every week.

Base yourself at Seaside Cottages and set off from Fish Hoek to try our top activities!

1. Cruising False Bay: Wildlife, Wonder & Water Adventures

False Bay emanates a quietly enchanting energy thanks to its wide horizons, calm sapphire ocean, and charismatic sealife. Awaken your child’s inner explorer when you arrive to unlock Cape Town's treasures. Start your quest with a daily cruise on board a Simon’s Town Boat Company vessel. Meet longtime ocean-lover, Dave Hurwitz, who can boast more than 23 years of maritime expertise and shares the infinite magic of this historic bay.

From the crest of a wave, you may meet Cape Fur seals flipping through the waves, tuxedo-clad penguins gliding past with purpose, and, if you’re lucky, rare whale species cruising not far from the boat. The sheltered bay offers generally safe rides for even the littlest adventurers. Sunset cruises are especially breathtaking. Think water that turns molten gold, shadows stretching over the mountains, and that refreshing sea breeze that has a way of unravelling the whole year’s stress. If you’re around in winter, the bay hosts its own VIP line-up: Blue whales, Humpbacks, Southern Rights, plus surprise visits from killer whales about ten times a year.

2. Seal Island: A Wild Ride to Cape Town’s Furriest Neighbourhood

For families craving a proper splash of adventure, the Seal Island Cruise is a winner. You’ll zip 16 km offshore to a raw, rugged island that feels like a secret world, home to roughly 75,000 Cape Fur seals, countless seabirds, and the fascinating rhythms of nature playing out far from human interference.

Kids love this trip: the noisy, playful seals, the open ocean, and the marine guide who keeps everyone entertained with fun facts and stories. In winter, great white sharks have been known to patrol the area, turning the island into a scene straight out of a nature documentary.

3. Cape Point by Boat: A Fresh Spin on a Famous Landmark

The Cape Point trip is a family-favourite for good reason. It’s fresh, active, and absolutely packed with scenery. Your journey begins at Simon’s Town pier, then sweeps past Boulders Beach, where penguins bob around in the water like monochrome rubber ducks. After meeting the small seal colony at Partridge Point, the boat glides along the cliffs and secret caves of Cape Point, one of the most dramatic coastlines in South Africa. On perfect weather days, the skipper might even nose the boat into a sea cave for an unforgettable moment. Spot a school of dolphins or an otter sunning itself on a rock on the way back as white-capped waves splash and serenade you.

Outdoor Family Fun Along the Southern Peninsula Coast

Planning activities for kids is usually a mission - but not along the False Bay coastline outside Cape Town. Here, every little village has something joyful to offer. Let’s start your November adventure:

1. Surfing in Muizenberg: Waves for All Ages

No visit to Muizenberg is complete without the iconic surfing lesson. With options for tots (from age 4), teens, adults, groups, and total beginners, it’s one of the best all-ages adventures on the peninsula. Qualified instructors handle everything, from balancing on the board to big cheers when someone finally stands up.

Quick tip: wipe the sunscreen off your hands beforehand—slippery hands and surfboards aren’t friends.

2. Silvermine: Hiking, Climbing & Summer Splashing

Silvermine is the Cape Peninsula’s outdoor playground. Tucked along Ou Kaapse Weg, it gives families the perfect mix of sunshine and scenery.

Hike to Elephant’s Eye Cave: A gentle, three-hour round trip with some of the best views in Cape Town.

Try beginner-friendly climbing: Safe for fit kids 13+, as long as you bring a guide.

Swim in Silvermine Dam: Cool water, fynbos fringes, picnic spots,

A wheelchair-friendly path around the dam and a compost toilet, too.

It’s one of those places where kids and dogs run wild, adults relax, and everyone ends the day sun-tired and happy.

3. Save Our Seas Shark Centre, Kalk Bay: Fascinating & Fun

This quirky, hands-on marine centre has all the charm of a science museum - just smaller and far more personal. Children can play shark bingo, spin the shark-tooth wheel of fortune, explore preserved marine specimens, and try their hand as “marine scientists” at the interactive touch-screen table. Some programmes even include a wander across the road to the Dalebrook tidal pool to learn about local sea creatures.

4. Horse Riding on Noordhoek Beach: A Storybook Experience

A 1.5-hour guided ride takes you through wetlands and along the sweeping white sands of Noordhoek Beach—backdropped by Chapman’s Peak and The Sentinel. Riders 12+ can join, even beginners, and along the way you’ll pass the historic shipwreck of the Kakapo. The horses are gentle, the scenery magnificent, and the photographs unforgettable.

5. Boulders Beach: Penguins, Paradise & Perfect Family Hours

This sheltered, postcard-perfect beach feels like a secret cove created just for children. Warm water, smooth boulders to climb, shallow pools to explore, and—of course—those adorable African penguins who waddle, swim, and occasionally zoom right past you like tiny torpedoes. Boulders Beach is one of the most wholesome, heart-lifting family outings on the peninsula.

6. Simon’s Town Scratch Patch: Gems, Golf & Glittering Treasures

A classic Cape adventure that never ages. Kids can scoop shimmering gemstones by the handful, explore enchanting rooms filled with colourful rocks, and discover two extra attractions:

Cave Golf: An 18-hole indoor course swirling with UV-lit tunnels, rock walls, and imaginative underground twists.

Mineral World: A glittering shop filled with stones, sculptures, jewellery, and special keepsakes. It’s the perfect place for little ones to pick a souvenir—and for adults to find something beautiful too.

Fish Hoek and Seaside Cottages in November

Feel Fish Hoek’s old-fashioned coastal charm with its glorious mountains rising in gentle folds, sun-washed beaches, and warm-water ocean that families adore. Explore the beautiful, protected bay - one of Cape Town’s safest swimming spots. Picture surfers, bodyboarders, kayakers, and small children building sandcastles where the waves curl softly.

Take a stroll from your perfect self-catering cottage at Seaside Cottages and find a restaurant, takeaways, and a playground. Shark spotters and lifeguards keep watch during the season. Join locals with ice-creams and cappuccinos on their favourite pathway, Jager’s Walk, as it winds along the rocks beside aqua pools and sea spray.

Look out for Southern Right whales gliding into the bay, often close enough to spot from the shore. Stroll into the town to wander into quirky shops, relaxed restaurants, and barbers. Above it all, the mountains hide ancient sandstone caves, including Peers’ Cave, where a 12,000-year-old skeleton known as the Fish Hoek Man was discovered. The local museum offers guided walks and stories that bring this history to life.

There is so much to do in November at Seaside Cottages. It's the lull before the storm, the peace before the crowds and the time you need before Christmas holidays take hold! Contact us today to hear about our rates. Divers head down into the depths to find the tiny, jewel-toned nudibranchs and abalone hiding in thick kelp forests. Tour boats cruise to discover pods of mighty whales breaching offshore. False Bay, stretching from Gordon's Bay through Fish Hoek to Cape Point, hosts a staggering diversity of marine species. This is largely due to the remarkable invisible forces of upwelling and ocean currents prevalent along this coastal stretch outside Cape Town.

The Secret Behind False Bay’s Biodiversity

Upwelling is one of nature’s great oceanic engines. As the persistent south-easterly winds sweep across the coastline, they push warm surface water away from the land. In its place, cold, nutrient-rich water surges up from the depths, carrying with it a dense cloud of nitrates, phosphates, and countless microscopic morsels that fuel the ocean’s food chain.

Phytoplankton flourish in these nutrient-dense waters, blooming into vast underwater meadows of life. In turn, they feed zooplankton, which sustain filter feeders, small fish, and the larger predators that follow. Add to that the meeting of two powerful ocean currents (the cold Benguela Current from the Atlantic and the warm Agulhas Current from the Indian Ocean), and you have one of the most productive marine ecosystems on the planet.

A Wonderland Beneath the Waves

Kelp forests, swaying like underwater sprites, provide shelter and food for everything from urchins, perlemoen and mud snails to shy cuttlefish and prehistoric-looking seven-gill cow sharks. These are creatures whose ancestors date back some 190 million years. Cuttlefish and mantis shrimp display an alien beauty, their skin shimmering and shifting in colour thanks to cells called chromatophores that allow them to camouflage, warn predators, or even communicate with one another.

For divers and snorkellers, False Bay is a dream. Descend into its cool waters, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by an astonishing menagerie in a world both strange and spectacular. Summertime in Fish Hoek offers ocean sports galore for young and old to try!

The Changing Performers of the Bay

False Bay’s underwater inhabitants change with the seasons. Throughout the year, discover Cape fur seals, Bryde’s whales, four species of dolphins (common, bottlenose, dusky, and humpback), African penguins, and even the occasional sunfish drifting lazily near the surface. But every so often, the calm rhythm of the bay is shattered by the arrival of dynamic predators - the glossy, charismatic Orcas, aka 'killer whales'.

When the Orcas come to hunt, the hunters become the hunted. False Bay has become known for two notorious individuals, Port and Starboard, a pair of shark-hunting Orcas recognised by their collapsed dorsal fins. Their chilling raids on great white sharks and dolphins have sent ripples through the ecosystem, sometimes driving the larger shark species from the bay for weeks.

The Majestic Orcas

Orcas, aka killer whales, are not actually whales at all, but the largest members of the dolphin family (Delphinidae). Their name, though dramatic, is a misnomer that dates back to when ancient sailors saw them hunting large prey. Their scientific name, Orcinus orca, also reflects this identity as killer whales because "Orcinus" translates to "of the kingdom of the dead". With sleek black-and-white bodies, towering dorsal fins, and an intelligence rivalling that of primates, Orcas are among the ocean’s most formidable predators.

Males can grow dorsal fins up to two metres high, slicing through the water like sails. They communicate with a symphony of whistles and clicks - the former for social interaction, the latter for echolocation, helping them locate prey in murky waters. The effect on nearby animals is unmistakable: whales and dolphins flee, while penguins and seals dash desperately for the safety of shore.

Despite their fierce reputation, Orcas are also highly social, intelligent, and family-oriented creatures, living in close-knit groups called pods that can remain together for decades.

Life and Death at Seal Island

Winter brings a different drama. As the bay turns calm and glassy, young Cape fur seals venture out from Seal Island to hunt, often right into the hunting grounds of great white sharks. Nature’s theatre plays out daily: survival, strategy, and instinct. By October and November, the island roars with life again as the breeding season begins. Massive bulls return to claim their harems of up to twenty females, and more than 74,000 seals crowd the rocks - including around 20,000 new pups, each one adorably unaware of the dangers lurking in the water below.

Venture out to Cape Point, where sheer cliffs drop into wild seas and seabirds nest in the crevices. On calm days, you can peer through the long golden kelp strands to the seafloor below, where fish dart and urchins graze. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a shy Cape clawless otter slipping through the shallows — a rare and heart-stirring sight.

A Bay of Wonders

False Bay is, in every sense, alive, and Fish Hoek locals consider it a liquid wilderness teeming with stories of survival, adaptation, and mystery. Whether you’re watching penguins waddle ashore at Boulders Beach, diving through kelp forests, or witnessing the black fins of orcas slicing through silver waves, you’re glimpsing one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

This summer, as the waters of False Bay shimmer beneath the sun, keep your eyes on the horizon because you never know when the ocean’s most powerful predator might appear.

Book your December vacation at Seaside Cottages today!

Stay at Seaside Cottages for instant beach pleasure and ocean activities. It all happens in False Bay, where Fish Hoek Beach provides a beautiful setting for sunshine bliss and water sports galore.

Grab a soft serve ice cream at The Galley, learn how to paddle ski and book surfing lessons just down the coast in Muizenberg. Stroll the cobbled lanes of Kalk Bay and watch navy ships come and go in Simonstown.

Seaside Cottages is the premier self-catering accommodation venue in Cape Town, offering excellent value for money and top-notch facilities.

Let's explore your surfski and paddling choices right here:

Fish Hoek Beach Sports Club (FHBSC)

Hiding behind the dunes, the FHBSC is the heartbeat of local surf ski, SUP, surfing, ocean kayaking and Hobie sailing. It’s a relaxed, friendly spot with hot showers, a bar, and a kitchen — and it runs purely on volunteer energy. Members meet for regular surf ski paddles on Saturday mornings, casual training sessions midweek, and once a month, sailing days on the bay. When the wind howls, feisty, staunch locals take on the legendary Miller’s Run — a downwind blast from Miller’s Point straight to Fish Hoek Beach.

The club also hosts the Mocke Paddling School and the famous Miller’s Taxi, the shuttle that makes those downwinds possible.

Must-Do Summer Paddling Events

Vlei to Fish Dash – 2025 Edition
A race like no other — from the vlei to the sea! The first 50 entries receive a free beanie, and winners take home cash. And yes, every finisher gets the ultimate prize: a boerie roll and an ice-cold beer on the house. The race starts with a lap around the vlei, through the river mouth, and then paddlers race to Fish Hoek Beach.
Registration: Lakeside, 1 pm | Start: 3 pm

Seadog Paddle Series – From 3 October 2025
Every Friday evening through summer, Fish Hoek Lifesaving Club comes alive. Seadogs line up on surfskis, prones, SUPs, and malibus to face whatever the Atlantic throws down. Since 2009, this race has never been cancelled — rain, shine, wind, or wild seas. Do six races before 5 December and you’ll be in the draw for a full Christmas braai-and-roast package. Race hard, stay late, and support the lifesaving club.

Downwind Camps – 16–22 November 2025
Hosted by Dawid and Jasper Mocke, this is seven days of pure paddling heaven. From orientation to downwind masterclasses on the Millers Run, you’ll eat, sleep, and breathe surfski alongside world champions. Expect daily coaching, skills sessions, and more paddling than you thought possible. The Downwind Camps is a 7-day surfski adventure where paddlers surfski downwind on the Millers Run. From accommodation to equipment, paddlers are sorted and stress-free.

The Five Capes Expedition
For the truly adventurous: paddle around the five great capes of Southern Africa — Recife, Seal, Agulhas, Knysna Heads, and the Cape of Good Hope itself. A once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list experience that ends with the iconic paddle around the fairest Cape of all.

Cape Point Challenge – 13 December 2025
The crown jewel of surfski racing. A 52km grind from Scarborough/Witsand to Fish Hoek, this race is as brutal as it is beautiful.
Adventure Season in the Mother City

Spring is about flowers, and spring is when Cape Town feels alive with energy. Take a drive to False Bay Fish Hoek to experience and indulge in mild weather, green mountains, and sparkling seas. The best stage for outdoor adventure! This is the time to swap the couch for a paraglider, a surf ski, or a hiking trail. Think:

Hiking up Table Mountain or exploring Silvermine’s forested paths

Cycling along the Sea Point Promenade with salty breezes in your hair

Kayaking with African Penguins at Boulders Beach

Skydiving, kloofing, scuba diving, and yes—even shark cage diving if your nerves allow!

Nature Gems for Your Spring List:

Fish Hoek’s Elsies Peak, Silvermine Nature Reserve, Cape Point, the Trappieskop trail, the walks at Clovelly Golf Course, and the many beach trails from Muizenberg to Noordhoek and back again! Add to this exciting explorations of Table Mountain National Park, Cape Point, Kogelberg, the Cederberg Wilderness, Kirstenbosch, and the wild stretches of West Coast National Park.

Whales, Penguins & Cape Town’s Ocean Royalty

Spring at Seaside Cottages also means whale-watching season. Southern Right Whales cruise into False Bay and along the Cape coast to calve, putting on one of the ocean’s greatest shows. From September through October, you can spot these gentle giants breaching, tail-slapping, and rolling in the water.

Whale-Watching Sweet Spots:

The Fish Hoek catwalk and Sunnycove

Simonstown (a hub for sightings)

Glencairn Beach and Elsies Peak

Cape Point (vantage views for miles)

Boyes Drive (between St James & Kalk Bay).

And while you’re in the neighbourhood, pop in to Boulders Beach’s African Penguin colony, then swim for hours between huge boulders where the ocean is clear and fish frolic in the kelp. If you’re up for something more adventurous, snorkel with Cape Fur Seals, kayak with penguins, or brave the cage for a Great White encounter.

Fish Hoek itself is buzzing in spring, famous for surf skiing, kayaking, and fishing. If you’ve been meaning to try a new watersport, this is the perfect playground.

We invite you to come and stay, cast a line, and experience our very own supernatural aquarium.

Shore Fishing, Rock Fishing and Surf Fishing in False Bay, Cape Town

Fish from the shore, fish from the rocks, fish from a boat - there’s ongoing real action in False Bay. This fishing destination is so unlike the warmer ocean up South Africa’s east coast. The Western Cape (False Bay in particular) is a seasonal fishing destination and anglers can catch fish all year round! Arrive in summer when the real action begins. Watch out for the notorious Cape Doctor, the loved and hated strong south-easterly wind. It is a good wind for fishing as it whips up the sea and stirs in a precious pulse of the warm Agulhas Current. As this warm eddy is swept into the bay, it coaxes fish species normally found hundreds of kilometres away into False Bay’s open arms.

Experienced and amateur anglers can make the most of this golden window between October and April. Fish like yellowtail, yellowfin tuna, kob, geelbek and squid (chokka) arrive in shoals to party and compete. In winter, the water cools, the currents shift, and False Bay transforms yet again. Anglers look out for hardy snoek, young yellowtail, and katonkel to take their bait.

Reading False Bay: It’s All About Wind, Bait, and Timing

Fish in False Bay follow the wind according to an innate clock. Summer's south-easter pushes warm currents and shoals of anchovy, sardine, and maasbanker into the bay. Predatory fish are drawn to these bait ball magnets. Anglers in the know watch the wind, track the bait, and time their trips with the lunar tides and solunar feeding windows. Keen fishermen know how to read the patterns and understand the wind, bait and timing. Fishing is a gamble - which is why people fish! What an endorphin and dopamine surge!

False Bay is the epicentre of this extraordinary dynamic between moon, tide, and temperature. It’s super powerful, and peak feeding occurs when the moon is directly overhead or beneath the fishermen - fish feel the pull. Add a falling barometer, signalling a weather change, and lucky chances skyrocket. Wind direction also dictates where fish will gather. South-easterly winds churn the seas off Kalk Bay and Strandfontein into the cloudy, bait-filled waters that kob adore, while a westerly might push fish to Gordon’s Bay.

Fabulous Fish Species in False Bay

Yellowtail

All year, peak in summer.
One of the bay’s most iconic fighters, yellowtail can show up anywhere from Cape Point to Seal Island. Their presence is often given away by terns dancing above baitballs. A hooked yellowtail doesn’t just bite, it bolts, slashing the surface and testing your gear to the limits.

Snoek

Winter specialist (Aug–Oct).
Snoek is no pushover despite its common presence in False Bay. On rod and reel, it’s a born fighter. Often caught in the hundreds by commercial boats, snoek are best hunted in places like Rocky Bank or Buffels Bay. Their sharp teeth and lightning-fast lunges demand sharp hooks and fast hands.

Silver Kob

Prime time: late summer gales.
False Bay’s kob are sly and powerful, drawn to the green, milky water churned up by the wind. They prowl nearshore zones like Swartklip, Kalk Bay, and Macassar. Live bait and patience will bring them to the boat or shore, especially after the south-easterly has calmed.

Geelbek

Summer (Nov–Mar), nocturnal thrill.
A night hunter with a taste for blue water, geelbek follow sardine and anchovy shoals into False Bay’s shallows. They hit hard and run deep. From Whittle Rock to the Steenbras River mouth, these golden-mouthed fish offer thrilling battles under moonlight.

Chokka (Squid)

Year-round fun, best in summer.
Squid fishing in False Bay has become a cult favourite and for good reason. All you need is a jig, a light, and a dash of patience. By night, their ghostly forms dart beneath your boat, tentacles flickering in your torch beam. Popular haunts include Simon’s Town, Buffels Bay and Fish Hoek.

False Bay Fishing Stories - Times are Changing

Fishing in False Bay is nothing new. For over 300 years, commercial and artisanal fishers have relied on this bay. Today, traditional line-fishing and trek-net fisherfolk (the trekkers) share the water with recreational anglers, scuba divers, surfers, and eco-tourists. During peak season, the beaches and slipways swell with boats, rods, and hopeful hearts.

But pressure is mounting. False Bay is South Africa’s largest true bay, and its resources are under strain. Urban sprawl, coastal resorts, pollution, and user conflict pose serious questions for the future. Is there space for everyone - fishers, developers, and dolphins alike?

Sustainable ventures such as shark cage diving, whale watching, and marine aquaculture offer a glimmer of hope. Experimental ventures like yellowtail ranching and whelk farming suggest that adaptation is possible if done responsibly.

Fish Hoek Fishing Is More Than a Catch

False Bay is a living ecosystem, a cultural hub, and a battleground for sustainable resource use. Whether you’re a seasoned angler chasing the flash of yellowtail near Bellows Rock or a curious first-timer casting for chokka off Fish Hoek, there’s something magnetic about fishing here.

Come armed with knowledge, respect the wind, honour the tides, and treasure the silence between the bites. Fishing in False Bay is about understanding the rhythm of the sea and becoming part of the story being written. You may haul in a trophy, you may haul in a bunch of kelp, but whatever happens, you will experience something new to add to your soul.

Absolutely! Here’s a well-rounded list of the best fishing spots in False Bay for amateur fishermen and casual anglers, whether you prefer casting from the shore, off the rocks, or dropping a line from a small boat or kayak. These spots are chosen for ease of access, good fish variety, and a high chance of success during the right season.

Top 10 Fishing Spots in False Bay for Amateur Anglers

1. Fish Hoek Beach

Best for: Chokka (squid), kob (silver kob), small reef species
Why go? Gentle beach, safe for families, easy wading access, and perfect for chokka jigging in the evenings.
Tips: Use a chokka jig at sunset or a light setup for kob in churned-up water after a southeasterly blow.

2. Kalk Bay Harbour Wall

Best for: Chokka, kob, small elf (shad), maasbanker (horse mackerel)
Why go? Classic, sheltered spot for harbour wall fishing. Easy for beginners and kids, and great fun at night.
Tips: Try a Sabiki rig for baitfish; chokka are often caught using jigs from the wall in summer.

3. Strandfontein Pavilion

Best for: Kob, Steenbras, elf
Why go? Long sandy beach with productive surf zones. Great after a southeasterly has stirred up the shallows.
Tips: Try fishing two hours before or after high tide; fresh pilchard bait works wonders for kob.

4. Macassar Beach

Best for: Kob, geelbek, rays, and sharks (catch and release!)
Why go? A hot summer spot after SE winds. The milky water draws in baitfish, and predators follow.
Tips: Fish near the estuary mouth for better results. Kob are often caught at dusk using live mullet or sardines.

5. Simon’s Town Harbour (Jetty and Nearby Rocks)

Best for: Chokka, maasbanker, reef fish
Why go? Sheltered, scenic, and productive for casual casting. Perfect for kayak anglers, too.
Tips: Great spot for night chokka fishing with a light and luminous jig. Bring a Sabiki rig for bait.

6. Millers Point Slipway Area

Best for: Yellowtail (from kayak/boat), chokka, snoek (in season)
Why go? One of the safest boat launch sites in the bay. Also accessible to land-based anglers on calmer days.
Tips: Paddle out just 200–300m and troll with spoons or deep-divers for yellowtail. Keep an eye on birds!

7. Strand Beach (Near the Pipe)

Best for: Kob, elf, stumpnose
Why go? Clean beach with easy parking and a wide surf zone. The area around the stormwater pipe is known for kob in summer.
Tips: Fish early morning or at dusk. Bloodworm or sardine baits do well here.

8. Gordon’s Bay Harbour Wall

Best for: Chokka, reef fish, maasbanker
Why go? Calm waters, ideal for light tackle and kids. Another solid chokka spot in summer evenings.
Tips: Drop a light into the water at night and work your jig slowly for squid.

9. Swartklip / Broken Road

Best for: Kob, steenbras, rays
Why go? Legendary stretch for surf anglers — when the water is right, it’s gold.
Tips: Fish after a strong SE wind. Try a running trace with fresh sardine or live bait.

10. Rooikraans (For the Adventurous)

Best for: Yellowtail (summer), katonkel
Why go? An iconic cliff-based fishing spot near Cape Point. Only for confident, experienced anglers with the right gear and safety in place.
Tips: Wear non-slip shoes, bring a cliff gaff, and never go alone.

Bonus Tips for Amateur Fishermen

Check tides and moon phases — fish are most active around high tide and during solunar periods.

Use fresh bait — pilchards, squid, and chokka work best.

Start early or fish at dusk — especially in summer, these are golden hours.

Watch the birds — terns and gulls hovering or diving usually signal baitfish (and bigger fish below).

Stay safe — fish in pairs, wear a PFD if near deep water, and watch the swell at rocky spots.

Whether you’re casting your line for the first time or rediscovering the joy of a quiet morning by the sea, False Bay offers something for every fisherman - especially those anglers with patience, curiosity, and a respect for the ocean’s rhythms.

This powerful phrase echoed across Pretoria on 9 August 1956, as more than 20,000 fearless women marched to the Union Buildings. They came from all corners of South Africa, united by one shared purpose: to protest against the cruel and dehumanising Pass Laws that sought to control their movement and silence their voices.

They stood in silence for 30 long minutes — a silence louder than any shout — then sang their resistance into the heart of the apartheid regime. Among these courageous women stood maidens like Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. They carried the hopes of women and the weight of a nation on their shoulders. It was a march, it was a movement, and today all South African women celebrate this special event in history as National Women’s Day.

Why August 9 Matters

The theme "Accelerate Action" is a call to action. It aims to encourage reflection on strategies, resources, and activities that can positively impact the development of women. It highlights the importance of celebrating women's achievements and addressing ongoing challenges. This public holiday is deeply rooted in decades of courage, struggle, and sisterhood.

From the early pioneers to the women reshaping parliament and policy today, South African women have always been at the frontlines in the fight for freedom. In 1994, women made up just 2.7% of Parliament, while today, nearly half of South Africa’s government includes women. That is the power of persistence!

Challenges remain. Women still face gender-based violence, unequal pay, educational disparities, and domestic pressures that often go unnoticed. Globally, 1 in 3 women experiences violence. Over 650 million girls are married before the age of 18, while 82 million women have no legal workplace protection. The numbers are staggering — but they fuel the fire for change.

Participate in the Spirit of Women’s Day 2025

National Women's Day is usually packed with festivities, activism, reflection, and community events. This year is no different. In Cape Town, discover some thrilling events for women on 9 August.

Because Every Day is Women’s Day

In homes, offices, kitchens, fields, classrooms and boardrooms, women are multitasking, managing, leading, nurturing, creating, building, healing, and making it all look effortless. National Women’s Day isn’t just a moment to spoil our women, it’s a moment to stand with them.

So on 9 August, whether you're swimming a mile, walking in pink, reading at the library, or simply letting the women in your life rest, reflect on this: we stand on the shoulders of giants — and we owe it to them to keep marching forward.

"Here’s to strong women: May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them."

Happy Women’s Day!

Here’s how to beat the winter blues and have an unforgettable holiday in Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, Glencairn, and Simonstown.

Beat the Winter Blues and Get Out and About in False Bay!

Take a Scenic Beach Walk

Start your day with a refreshing walk along Fish Hoek Beach, one of the most stunning stretches of sand on the False Bay coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, continue your stroll to Glencairn, where the gentle lapping of the waves and crisp sea air will leave you feeling invigorated.

Grab a Bite at a Local Favorite

Once in Glencairn, warm up with a juicy burger and chips at Pizza Khaya. This cosy spot is a local favourite, offering delicious food with a laid-back atmosphere—perfect for a casual winter lunch.

Hike with a View

Up for a challenge? Pack some hot chocolate in a flask and head up Elsie’s Peak. The breathtaking views over False Bay make the climb absolutely worth it. After soaking in the sights, take a leisurely hike back down and find a bench along Jager’s Walk, where you can watch the waves roll in and keep an eye out for passing whales—a magical winter experience.

Explore Silvermine Wetland

For a change of pace, take a stroll around the Silvermine Wetland. This tranquil nature reserve is teeming with birdlife, and if you're lucky, you might spot one of the elusive Western Leopard Toads. The lush scenery and peaceful surroundings make this an ideal spot for nature lovers.

Golf and Good Times

If golf is your game, you’re in luck! Clovelly Golf Course offers a beautiful setting for a morning round. Not a golfer? No problem! The Clovelly Country Club has a warm, inviting bar where you can enjoy a cold beer and a plate of hot chips, perfect for winding down after an active day.

Kalk Bay Adventures

For those who love exploring charming coastal villages, Kalk Bay is a must-visit. Take a scenic hike up Trappies Kop, then reward yourself with a steaming coffee at one of Kalk Bay’s quirky cafés. While you're there, don’t miss a wander through the Kalk Bay Harbour—home to colourful fishing boats, bustling seafood restaurants, and of course, the legendary Kalky’s, where you can feast on fresh fish and chips straight from the ocean.

Take a Scenic Drive to Cape Point

No holiday in False Bay is complete without a drive down to Cape Point, where the dramatic cliffs and endless ocean views are nothing short of spectacular. Make sure to stop and explore the ancient lighthouses, take in the fresh sea air, and maybe even spot some wildlife along the way.

Ready for an Unforgettable Winter Holiday?

There’s no reason to let the cooler temperatures keep you indoors. Fish Hoek and its neighbouring coastal gems are packed with exciting activities for every kind of traveller. Breathe in the fresh sea air, watch the dolphins play on a long beach walk and feel free to be you. Whether you’re in the mood for ocean thrills, mountain hikes, penguin spotting or dining in style, Seaside Cottages is the perfect place to be.

Things to Do this Human Rights Day

✔ Take a peaceful stroll along Fish Hoek Beach and admire the breathtaking views stretching from Muizenberg to Cape Point.
✔ Feeling adventurous? Explore the coastal wonders of Noordhoek, Silvermine Nature Reserve, or Kommetjie with scenic trails and untamed beauty.
✔ Stay active with a hike up Elsies Peak, a surf lesson, or a beachside run in Cape Point.
✔ Most importantly, take a moment to reflect on the meaning of Human Rights Day—the right to live freely, to be heard, and to be respected.

Why Do We Celebrate Human Rights Day?

Human Rights Day marks a pivotal moment in South African history—the Sharpeville Massacre of 21 March 1960. On this day, peaceful protesters stood up against unjust pass laws, only to be met with violence. Their courage reshaped the course of our country, paving the way for a democratic South Africa.

In 1994, Nelson Mandela declared March 21st as Human Rights Day to honour those who fought for equality. In his words:

"I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities."

Human Rights Month 2025 – What’s Next?

The theme for Human Rights Month 2025 is “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights.” While we have made great strides, challenges such as racism, xenophobia, gender-based violence, and economic disparity persist. This month, let’s commit to creating and being part of a fairer, more inclusive society for future generations.

Let’s use this time to spread kindness, uplift those in need, and continue striving for justice and equality.

Know Your Rights

South Africa’s Constitution, one of the most progressive in the world, guarantees essential rights for all:

✔ Equality – Every individual deserves fair treatment and legal protection.
✔ Freedom of Movement – The right to live and travel freely.
✔ Human Dignity – Respect for every person’s worth.
✔ Freedom of Expression & Belief – The right to speak your truth and practice your faith.
✔ Access to Education, Healthcare, Housing & a Clean Environment – A better life for all South Africans.

Happy Human Rights Month 2025!

Book your stay at Seaside Cottages and celebrate your South African heritage in a place of peace and beauty.

Easter 2025 in Fish Hoek is the Next Big Celebration!

It comes quietly after Christmas when the first school term is closing and the height of summer has reached its peak. The hot days become shorter, balmy cool days and Easter heralds the next big festival of the year. It’s a special long weekend, celebrated worldwide with religious traditions, chocolate bunnies, and tasty seafood feasts.

At Seaside Cottages we love Easter because we welcome families and friends to our warm homes away from home. Yes, here in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, Easter is a time for gathering with loved ones, indulging in delicious food, and enjoying the last golden days of summer.
What’s Easter All About?

Easter is a Christian holiday that marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally, churches are adorned with Easter lilies, and families gather to share meals and celebrate. But Easter isn’t just about church services—modern traditions include Easter parades, egg hunts, the Easter Bunny, and much festive feasting. Easter is a ‘moveable feast’ as it does not fall on a fixed date and is worked out according to a lunisolar calendar (solar year plus Moon phase) similar to the Hebrew calendar. This year, Easter is 18-21 April! Start planning your Easter break at Seaside Cottages today!

Many people rate it as their favourite beach in the world thanks to the stunning sparkling ocean, the breathtaking views and the well-serviced beach. It’s so relaxing to sit awhile at the lovely beach café with freshly brewed coffee while watching the waves roll in. The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and the setting is simply perfect.

Choose a Seaside Cottage as your base!

Top 10 Reasons Why Fish Hoek is So Hot

Fish Hoek Beach is one of the safest and most family-friendly beaches on the False Bay coastline.

The 1.5 km stretch of sand is protected from strong currents and big waves, making it a haven for swimmers, snorkelers, and sandcastle-builders alike. The beach is a favourite for retirees and families, offering a relaxed, community-driven vibe.

The warm currents of False Bay make the water a few degrees warmer than the Atlantic beaches, and while the famous “Cape Doctor” wind keeps things cool, the sun is still strong—so don’t forget sunscreen!

The whale-watching season may not be in full swing in February, but keep an eye on the bay—sometimes, you’ll spot canoeists gliding alongside playful dolphins.

Jager's Walk, a scenic coastal path beside the bay, is perfect for a Sunday morning stroll.

Seaside Cottages offers a classy home away from home, made for relaxing in paradise.

There is so much to do including hiking, kayaking, diving, eating out and cycling.

Fish Hoek is the gateway to Simon’s Town, a picturesque naval village just a short drive away, a smorgasbord of restaurants, curio shops and views.

Boulders Beach is home to one of the world’s few African penguin colonies and offers some of the best snorkelling in the Cape.

Cape Point is so close and arguably the most popular nature reserve in the Cape with its dramatic and unmissable ocean bays, hikes and restaurant.

A Quick Look at 2025’s Cycle Tour Key Dates

The Big Day: Sunday, 9 March 2025, marks the 47th edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The Prelude Challenge: Cyclists can warm up with this virtual 109km challenge from 22 February to 2 March 2025, logging their rides on STRAVA from anywhere in the world—outdoors or even on a stationary bike.

For more details, check out Cape Town Cycle Tour’s official website.

How It All Began

Did you know that the Cape Town Cycle Tour began as a modest protest in 1978 for better cycling infrastructure in the city and has grown into the largest timed cycling event in the world? It was called "The Big Ride In" and was organized by cycling advocates Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann. Sure, there was resistance but this initial ride drew more than 500 passionate cyclists and planted the seeds for the race we all love to watch yearly – it is indeed a cultural phenomenon.

Look forward to the March 2025 Cape Town Cycle Tour and be part of the celebration of inclusivity and resilience. The event continues to break boundaries, drawing more than 30,000 riders worldwide annually – a unique blend of seasoned pros, weekend warriors, first-time riders, charity punters and several handicapped heroes.

The Route Showcases Fish Hoek and Beyond

The Cape Town Cycle Tour’s 109km route unfolds through the spectacular Southern Peninsula’s unbeaten scenery. Starting in the bustling heart of Cape Town, cyclists embark on a journey that winds through forested slopes, sparkling coastlines, Fynbos displays and some truly challenging climbs. It’s a chance to see baboons at play, dolphins surfing and seagulls bantering over bait from local fisherfolk. Make Seaside Cottages your base!

Stage by Stage

Early Grind: Starting near Cape Town Castle, riders face the first uphill test on Nelson Mandela Boulevard and Wynberg Hill.

Coastal Bliss: The route flattens out through Simonstown and glides past the majestic Smits Winkel Bay.

Ocean Escapes: Cyclists savour the cool sea breeze through Scarborough and Misty Cliffs—nature’s reminder to breathe and enjoy the ride.

The Double Dare: Chapman’s Peak (aka “Chappies”) and Suikerbossie loom large as the final trials, their steep inclines the final test.

Victory Lap: The home stretch offers stunning views through Camps Bay, Clifton, and Sea Point, with the finish line just in sight.

We welcome you to this year's 47th Cycle Tour - stay at Seaside Cottages and spend time exploring the Peninsula. Fish Hoek offers excellent restaurants, hikes, ocean activities and sports.

Fish Hoek is the best beach this side of Cape Town so join us to celebrate a slower year of introspection and kindness. Yes, the first month of 2025 has already hinted at mystical beginnings with January’s Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the year.

This enormous ball of luminescent pearly yellow reminds us of fresh starts and time to ponder our lives anew. The Wolf Moon’s silvery light whispers of resilience, connection, and the beauty of simplicity—qualities that resonate deeply in this False Bay holiday haven. Seaside Cottages are the best self-catering holiday accommodation homes this side of Cape Town.

A Seaside Sanctuary to Reconnect

Fish Hoek embodies a slower, gentler pace of life. The bay’s calm, turquoise waters invite you to set aside your worries and take a swim, while its pristine white sands seem to stretch endlessly, urging you to walk barefoot and feel the earth beneath you.

Here, life feels intentional. Locals gather on Jager’s Walk, exchanging smiles as they stroll along the rocky coastline, pausing to marvel at the dolphins dancing in the waves or the Southern Right whales gracing the bay in late winter. There’s a sense of belonging here—a reminder that we, too, are part of a greater whole. Everyone accepts everyone else, no matter their walk of life, their age, or their reason for being here, now. It’s January 2025 and everyone is here to gather new perspectives on being human during troubled times. If you visit Fish Hoek and Seaside Cottages, you will get our special treatment and you will feel as if you have come home.

January is a Time for Fresh Perspectives

January, the first month of the Gregorian calendar, is named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, endings, transitions, and duality. Janus is often depicted with two faces—one looking back at the past and the other looking ahead to the future—symbolizing reflection and anticipation.

January holds a unique position in our lives:

It’s a month of renewal, marking the start of a new year and offering a clean slate.

It’s a time for introspection, where people look back on lessons learned and set intentions or resolutions for what lies ahead.

In the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Cape Town’s Fish Hoek, January is mid-summer—a time for outdoor adventures, warmth, and blooming nature.

The name itself carries a sense of transition and opportunity. January represents a gateway, much like Janus, between what has been and what is yet to come—a reminder to pause, reflect, and step forward with purpose. As the proteas bloom, their striking forms remind us of life’s resilience and beauty. These iconic South African flowers flourish in adversity, thriving in the rugged fynbos of the Cape. What better symbol to inspire us as we navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead?

The Protea Symbolises Resilience and Transformation

The Cape Protea, or King Protea (Protea cynaroides), is South Africa's national flower and a powerful symbol of resilience, transformation, and beauty. Found mainly in the Cape Floral Kingdom—a biodiversity hotspot that’s home to some of the world’s most unique plant species—the protea has both a profound cultural and ecological significance.

Resilience and Survival: The protea thrives in the harsh, fire-prone landscapes of the Cape. Its ability to regenerate after wildfires, with seeds that germinate in nutrient-rich ash, symbolizes strength, endurance, and the ability to flourish in adversity.

Diversity and Adaptability: With over 80 species, the protea family showcases incredible diversity. This makes it a symbol of South Africa’s multicultural identity and the idea that beauty lies in variety and coexistence.

Transformation and Growth: Proteas are named after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his form. This connection emphasizes adaptability, change, and evolving into something stronger and more magnificent—a message of hope and transformation.

Pride and Uniqueness: The striking, crown-like appearance of the King Protea reflects its name, making it a symbol of South African pride and the country’s natural beauty.

For many, the protea is a reminder to stay grounded while embracing growth and change. It inspires us to remain steadfast in the face of challenges and to find beauty in the cycles of life, death, and renewal. In South Africa, the protea features prominently in art, design, and even sports, representing national unity and excellence. Its symbolism of resilience and renewal is especially powerful for those looking to embrace change and personal growth.

Fish Hoek is the Holiday Place to Be

Fish Hoek’s peaceful atmosphere offers the perfect setting to set intentions for the year. Whether you’re meditating on the beach, exploring the historical treasures of Peers Cave, or hiking up Elsie’s Peak for sweeping views of False Bay, the town encourages you to reconnect with yourself, your goals, and the natural world.

Fish Hoek’s strength lies in its community, where well-being and togetherness take center stage. Local initiatives, from wellness retreats to eco-conscious activities, reflect a shared commitment to health and harmony. Traditional herbalists share generations of knowledge, while modern spas and wellness centers cater to every need, creating a space for healing, both physical and emotional.

Life in Fish Hoek is a reminder that slowing down doesn’t mean losing momentum—it means finding clarity. January’s calm can be the foundation for a purposeful, fulfilling year.

Let the proteas inspire you with their enduring beauty. Watch the tides ebb and flow and feel the rhythm of the natural world guiding you back to your centre. So, take a deep breath. Smell the proteas and book your first break for 2025 at Seaside Cottages.

Celebrate the Magic of December Beach Holidays

The Perfect Time for a Cape Town December Getaway

Whether it's enjoying local festivals, shopping for Christmas gifts at one of the many markets, or simply strolling along the beach, Cape Town offers something for everyone.

Christmas Traditions and Celebrations

December is Christmas time, a month of celebration and reflection. For Christians, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, and Christmas Eve, the night before Christmas Day, is an important part of the celebration. Many churches hold midnight Mass to mark the occasion, and the atmosphere of anticipation and joy fills the air. Christmas Eve is often called “Holy Night,” with many traditions steeped in spiritual meaning, including prayers, carolling, and candlelight services.

In the Christian liturgical calendar, the festivities begin on the First Sunday of Advent and culminate on Christmas Day, celebrated on December 25th. In many cultures, Christmas lasts longer, extending into the Twelve Days of Christmas, which run from December 25th to January 5th. This period is a time for continued celebration, feasting, and enjoying the holiday season with family and friends.

Whether you celebrate with a midnight service, a family meal, or a simple gathering, Christmas in December is a time to cherish and reflect on the year gone by. It’s a perfect moment to share joy and togetherness with loved ones.

Choose to stay at Seaside Cottages for these reasons:

“If you like swimming in the sea with the protection of a really cool bunch of lifesavers, a shark net and shark spotters, on a clean beach to dry off on.”

“It's a beautiful sandy beach with stunning views. Lots of locals walking their dogs. Close to restaurants and shops. Great for an afternoon by the sea.”

“It’s way beyond my expectations! Fish Hoek is absolutely amazing with awesome views! The town is like a time portal, panoramic sea views, sights of ocean life, submarines and Navy ships.”

December Holidays at the Seaside

Fish Hoek Beach is one of Cape Town's most popular coastal destinations - the beach is a perfect spot for swimming, sunset views, and a range of water activities, including paddle boating, surfing, and bodyboarding. During peak season, safety is prioritized with lifeguards, shark spotters, and a shark exclusion net. Find it along Beach Road, alongside the lively main road lined with restaurants and shops.

The beach also offers convenient amenities, such as a quaint restaurant and takeaway, an emergency boat launch site, a yacht club, a surf ski club, partial disability access, and parking for up to 600 vehicles. Dog owners bring their mutts of all shapes and sizes to one section of the sand for four-legged social gatherings at all times of the day.

Fish Hoek Beach is loved for its warmer waters in the calm False Bay - a drawcard for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. A small drawback is that they attract more sharks than beaches along the Atlantic seaboard. Lifeguards and shark spotters are on duty throughout the busy summer months to ensure visitors' safety. The Great White Sharks are scarce these days but some Bronze Whalers cruise the bay for yellowtail in season.

At the top of the beach, Jager’s Walk promenade runs alongside rocky outcrops and tidal pools, offering a scenic route for walkers and prime whale-watching opportunities from June to November. To the north lies Clovelly Beach, a quieter, pet-friendly stretch of sand popular with local fishermen and dog walkers.

From Seaside Cottages, Clovelly Beach is a stone’s throw away, on the Silvermine estuary. Its soft white sands and serene atmosphere provide a peaceful escape from the busier Fish Hoek side of the bay. Framed by ancient dunes, its warm waters are perfect for junior surfers, though the tides can be treacherous. Look out for playful dolphins in the surf while mating whales breach and rear their young from June to November – perfect for whale-watching holidays.

Travel the eastern seaboard of the Cape Peninsula to discover its unique charm, character, and stunning beaches. This coastline is a favourite summer escape for multi-generational families, a hub for creative types, and home to a unique blend of hipster vibes and surfer cool. Start your journey in Muizenberg, then follow the scenic coastal road through Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek, all the way to Simon’s Town. Or, for a more relaxed experience, hop on the safe blue train – for a picturesque journey into the heart of the area’s charming seaside villages.

Elsies Peak Hikes and Flowers

If you love hiking in the great outdoors, try the scenic and accessible 4.2km circular trail up to Elsies Peak. This easy walk takes you to the peak and is named after the indigenous rooiels trees that once grew here. Cunonia capensis, the butterspoon tree, butterknife tree, African red alder, red alder or rooiels, is a small tree found in the afromontane forests of southern Africa, and along rivers. It is grown as an ornamental in gardens for its attractive glossy foliage and its clusters of tiny, scented, white flowers.

Meanwhile, the trail is straightforward, with clear markings and rock steps in certain sections, and can be accessed from either Fish Hoek or Glencairn. Suitable for both children and dogs, it also blends in a few steep sections and cold winds. The reward, however, is the refreshing scent of fynbos and breathtaking panoramic 360-degree views. From the top, you can take in the entire stretch of False Bay, all the way to Strand and Gordon’s Bay, then back around to Noordhoek and even a tiny spot of Kommetjie.

Simon’s Town Navy and Penguins

Set off on a canoe trip around Simon’s Town as a fantastic way to explore the scenic False Bay coastline. The penguin kayak tour starts at the waterfront, passing the naval harbour and heading towards Boulders Beach, where you can spot penguins and other marine life from the comfort of your kayak. Depending on the tide and timing, you may even get a chance to stop for a snack and take a dip in the clear waters. While summer is known for warm days and water, it also brings the southeaster winds, which can make kayaking a bit challenging. Winter, on the other hand, offers calmer, windless days that are perfect for kayaking – and there’s a good chance of spotting whales while you're out on the water!

Things to Do in False Bay

Outdoor adventures: boat trips, kayaking, surfing, whale watching, shark cage diving, snorkelling, or ocean safaris

Visit beaches: Muizenberg, St James, Fish Hoek, and Simonstown - or swim in the Dalebrook, Wooley's, Glencairn or Miller's Point Tidal Pools

Browse for antiques: Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown

Play golf: tee off at the Clovelly Golf Course

Cafes and Restaurants: Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Glencairn, and Simonstown for charming seaside coffees and a bite to eat

Swim across the bay: Take one of the two 34 km swim routes across the bay, starting from North East to South West and ending in the Cape Point region

Harbours: the photogenic Kalk Bay and Simonstown Harbours

Nature Reserves: Cape Point, Silvermine and Soetwater - all part of the Table Mountain National Park.

Seaside Cottages are waiting for you this summer. Pull in for some fun in the sun on Fish Hoek Beach!

In Cape Town, male baboons can weigh almost as much as an adult human! In Fish Hoek, baboons are not prevalent, but just around the corner in Welcome Glen and Simonstown, baboons roam the mountains and often the streets. Sadly, our Cape baboons are suffering from increasing human pressures in an urban setting - which is why we see more of them in local neighbourhoods. They have developed a taste for human food (a lot of it processed and therefore unhealthy) and tend to forage for waste left behind in streets, bins, and yards. They will even force their way into homes to get the food inside kitchens and refrigerators.

Thanks to the rich biodiversity of Cape Town's landscape, a variety of fascinating creatures inhabit wetlands, rivers, rocky shores and beaches, mountains, fynbos and open grassy areas. Discover plentiful birds, small mammals, snakes, tortoises and chameleons, each species with its place in the web of life.

At Seaside Cottages, beautiful birds enjoy our succulent and fynbos gardens: Cape sugarbirds, sunbirds, dikkops, plovers, geese and the local hadeda and sacred ibis species. Sit on the green lawns under a thatched pagoda and watch the wildlife go by or take a walk on the wild side as you adventure along Fish Hoek Beach to see whales breaching, jellyfish floating and seagulls soaring.

We cater for your birding or hiking group with our wonderful self-catering accommodation!

Check out our facilities here!

Fun Fact!

Cape Town is home to around:

364 birds

83 mammals

27 amphibians (2 endemic)

8 freshwater fish

more than 140 invertebrates

Other mammals in Cape Town include Porcupine, Caracal, Cape fox, African Wild Cat, Honey Badger, Genet and Cape Leopard – to name a few. Smaller mammals like baboons, klipspringers, grysbok, dassies, mongooses and the striped field mouse are typical of the area.

The Cape has over half of South Africa's frog species. Of the 62 different frogs we have here, 29 are found nowhere else on earth. All six bird species endemic to the south-west Cape are fynbos species, particularly the Cape sugarbird and orange-breasted sunbird which are not found in any other type of vegetation. These birds play an important role in pollinating Cape flowers. In addition, fynbos supports a large number of butterflies, though many are at risk.

Many of the reptiles and amphibians are both endemic and threatened - the geometric tortoise is considered the world's second-rarest tortoise!

Urbanisation and development pose enormous and increasing threats to all wildlife as more and more people move into cities and fragment the natural environment. What's more foreign (often called 'alien invasive') plants and animals often replace the local species and they tend to thrive without predators or natural pests.

Some of Cape Town's Rarest Species

Table Mountain Ghost Frog

Micro Frog (or Cape Flats Frog)

Geometric Tortoise

Dickson’s Monkey Blue (butterfly)

Western Leopard Toad

Cape Mountain Toad

Cape Clawed Platanna

Barber’s Cape Flats ranger (butterfly)

The name itself is a playful blend of "mo" (slang for moustache) and "November." While the moustache is the signature symbol of the movement, many participants support the cause in other ways too.

Seaside Cottages supports men in Movember.

There is only one rule: You must begin the month of Movember clean-shaven. Then, for 30 days, you must grow and groom your moustache - shaving other parts of your face, of course. Seaside Cottages has made up the second rule: book a weekend with us to grow that moustache beside the ocean!

Join everyone on social media platforms as they emphasize the movement, sharing their journey using the hashtag #Movember, and creating a global community united for men’s health. Ultimately, Movember is about changing the face of men's health—literally and figuratively—by using the moustache as a symbol to spark important conversations.

Fish Hoek joins this amazing annual global movement every November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges such as suicide prevention. The initiative encourages men to grow moustaches as a symbol of support, sparking conversations around early detection, treatment, and prevention of health problems that disproportionately affect men.

Run by the Movember Foundation, the event has become a massive global force, raising over $837 million since its inception and funding more than 1,200 projects across 20+ countries. By rallying men, known as "Mo Bros," to embrace the movement, the goal is to promote regular health check-ups, awareness of family cancer histories, and lifestyle changes to reduce preventable deaths. Women, called "Mo Sistas," also play a vital role by supporting and promoting the cause.

The Men’s Foundation states that in South Africa, “Prostate Cancer is the leading cancer affecting South African men, with a 1 in 16 lifetime risk based on the National Cancer Registry (NCR) 2017 figures. African men are over 2 times more likely to develop prostate cancer and more aggressive forms of the disease. Testicular Cancer cases have doubled over the past 10 years – known as the young man’s disease, reports of men in their 30’s and 40’s are being diagnosed.”

Did you know that “the international observance of International Coffee Day is a tribute to what has become one of humanity's most loved beverages-cup-after-cup, and one that gives us much more than just a caffeine boost? This year's campaign is "Coffee, Your Daily Ritual, Our Shared Journey", which honours collaboration within the sector, promoting sustainable practices while supporting livelihoods among coffee farmers worldwide."

This annual event provides an opportunity to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and to advocate for positive changes that promote better living conditions for all. World Habitat Day calls for action to address housing challenges, urban inequality, and environmental sustainability."

On a lighter note, WOMAD is here in Cape Town this October – the renowned World of Music, Arts and Dance festival will last for one week only, 1-7 October! Celebrate South Africa’s creative talent blended with international artists who take to the stage in a cacophony of melodies, lights and joy!

And then it is time to wander the beautiful gardens in Noordhoek, home to diverse animals and birds, habitats and loved gardens. It's Open Gardens 2024 already, time to appreciate huge old oak trees, plain trees and yellowwood trees that provide shade and shelter for people, squirrels, birds and other critters. Value the love that creates havens of solitude and magnificence!
