Cape Point Challenge
Race weekend 14th/15th December 2024
From Scarborough/Witsand to Fish Hoek Beach - 52km
The race kicked off in 1980, originally alternating with the famous PE to East London race. The current full course race record is 3:39:50 held by Hank McGregor and men who have won the race twice include Herman Chalupsky; Oscar Chalupsky; Paul Marais, Dawid Mocke, Peter Creese and Hank McGregor. Women who have won the race twice include Jean Wilson, Nikki Mocke, Michele Eray, Bianca Beavitt and Hayley Nixon. A total of 26 races have been held so far: 4 with strong north-westerly winds; 13 with strong south-easterly winds; 6 with ‘calm’ conditions and 2 with massive swell with little wind.
Downwind Camps
The Downwind Camps is a 7-day surf ski trip to Fish Hoek, South Africa to paddle surf ski downwind on the Millers Run. The Camp is hosted by Dawid and Jasper Mocke, both world champions and downwind zealots, who take special care of all participants from beginning to end, including all accommodation and equipment.
There are 5 Camps to choose from, each lasting from Sunday to Saturday.
Day 1: basic orientation, boat allocation and set-up in a light-hearted day to get comfortable paddling and ready to go.
Day 2 - end: each day begins and ends with paddling downwind. Paddlers get to paddle downwind as much as they want to on this famous downwind route with the world’s best paddlers.
Specific training and instruction from Dawid and Jasper Mocke:
- the basic pillars of downwind paddling
- finding the runs
- specific skill-enhancing downwind drills
- advanced racing tips
- stroke correction
- paddle choice, length and angle
- boat choice
- the perfect boat set-up
- nutrition and the paddler’s ‘mind’.

Downwind Camps are Unforgettable!
The Miller’s Run
This is known as the world’s best downwind paddle from its stunning location below the breathtaking landmark of Cape Point, the Cape of Good Hope. It is always windy here and the Miller’s Run stretches 12 km along the ocean in hectic windy conditions made for downwind paddling. Winds and swells change constantly attracting novice and expert paddlers who can all cope in their chosen conditions. Some runs are extremely dangerous and others are fun and light-hearted. Choose your difficult!
The 5 Capes
Paddle around the five most famous capes of Southern Africa on a surf ski led by world champions, Jasper and Dawid Mocke. The adventure includes 11 days/10 nights of accommodation, transfers, food and drinks, equipment and logistics, guiding and coaching.
* Days 1 & 2 – paddle Cape Recife and Cape St Francis
From Port Elizabeth around Cape Recife - ride the longest surf ski wave in the world.
* Days 3 & 4 – Paddle Cape Seal and the Knysna Heads
From Plettenberg Bay around Cape Seal, or the Robberg peninsula, one of South Africa’s most precious marine protected areas and headland leading to Bahia Formosa. Then the amazing Knysna Lagoon, home to the world’s only estuarine seahorses, to paddle through the Knysna Heads.
* Days 5 & 6 – Paddle Cape Agulhas
Stay in Arniston and visit the L’Agulhas Lighthouse, housing South Africa’s lighthouse museum and perhaps enjoy a meal at a restaurant at the bottom of Africa. Paddle around the southernmost tip of Africa – Cape Agulhas to the small harbour of Struisbaai.
* Days 7, 8 & 9 – Paddle The Cape Of Good Hope and Cape Point
End in Cape Town, around the Cape of Good Hope. To experience the Cape of Good Hope is to experience much of what it means to be South African.

Seadog Paddle Series
The Seadog Paddle Series began one Friday evening in October 2009 and has never missed a Friday since! Every Friday from October to March surf skis and other ocean crafts take off from Fish Hoek Beach to race.
The SEADOG is a registered NPO that wants to uphold and grow an event series that truly makes a difference at the community level through its positive value system and financial contribution.
