- environmental education and information
- water quality
- environmental management
- safety and services.
Participation in this international programme is voluntary and the status indicates that the beaches all feature their own environmental education programmes, offer bathing water of the highest standard, are clean, promise adequate ablution facilities and parking, are environmentally sound, are safe and secure to visit, and adhere to international safety and tourism standards.

Seaside Cottages is a Blue Flag Beach Accommodation Venue
Come and stay at Seaside Cottages and experience this Blue Flag beach. We love the way the Blue Flag project aims to connect the public with their surroundings and encourage them to learn more about their environment. In this way, environmental education activities must be offered and promoted in addition to a permanent display of information relevant to the site in terms of biodiversity, ecosystems and ecological phenomena.
Walk to Fish Hoek Beach from Seaside Cottages and see the display boards, the murals, the fantastic wire whale waste bins, the Shark flags and the very clean ablutions. City staff work here full-time to ensure a waste-free and seaweed-free beach is safe for all swimmers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are lifesavers on duty, a superb takeaway food venue called Drifters, two restaurants and plenty of picturesque and colourful benches along the extensive catwalk!
This year (2023), the Blue Flag programme turns 35, having started off in 1987. There will be global Blue Flag celebrations and events to highlight the aims and vision of this wonderful venture. It's time to increase all endeavours to provide environmental education, ensure the protection of the marine environment and human health, improve accessibility, and implement safety worldwide.
