6 of the Best Child-friendly Experiences in Cape Town

Cape Town was recently rated the top city in the world and the Cape Town Big 6 are the best attractions this year in the Mother City. It takes time to explore these exciting destinations so we have highlighted our favourite three - and added our own Fish Hoek top three attractions. There is plenty to do this Youth Month between autumn and winter, a time when the sun is still bright and the beaches perfect.

1.      Cape Point – It’s school holidays during June and July so bring the kids to ride on the Flying Dutchman Funicular then head back down to the Two Oceans Restaurant and order any one of the mouthwatering kiddies meals. Cape Point is found within Table Mountain National Park, within the Cape of Good Hope area which covers the whole of the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula. It’s generally wild and pristine, a home for seabirds and Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos. Look out for the Bontebok, Eland, and Ostriches on your walks.

2.      Groot Constantia – Cellar tours are ideal for the whole family at Groot Constantia Estate where all ages can find out more about the fascinating wine-making process. The kids enjoy a juice tasting while parents sip award-winning wines. Groot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa and a provincial heritage site in Constantia Cape Town. In 1685, Simon Van der Stel built the house produced wine, fruit, and vegetables, and farmed cattle.

3.      Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden - Kirstenbosch is an outdoor wonderland for children of all ages, teenagers included.  Explore the garden in the winter school holidays, and find beautiful blooming aloes, proteas, and other indigenous plants. Bring your picnic and stroll under ancient trees with your friends and family. Kirstenbosch was founded in 1913 to preserve and cultivate indigenous plants, the first botanical garden in the world with this ethos.

4.      Hiking from Fish Hoek – Cape Town hiking is one of the most popular ways to get the best views and no crowds. Hot spots for hiking from Fish Hoek are Silvermine Nature Reserve and the Silvermine Wetland at Clovelly, Elsies Peak, Kalk Bay Trappies Kop, Peers Cave, and the Clovelly Golf Course. Discover the finest hiking trails on guided walks, and learn more about the fynbos, birdlife, ancient San people, and the environment around you.

5.      Simonstown Whale Watching Boat Tour - Get up close and personal with Southern Right and Humpback Whales on a whale watching boat trip from Simonstown. These cetaceans are plentiful in False Bay from May to November if you are lucky, an area that is sheltered from the main ocean and surrounded by stunning views. See these, gigantic and magnificent mammals, as large as elephants, swimming alongside the boat, and be ready to photograph a whale breaching or giving you a friendly wave with its tail.

6.      Golfing at Clovelly or Simonstown Country Clubs – Clovelly is an 18-hole picturesque course with rolling fairways that complements its rich coastal environment with its natural dune, water features, and a wide variety of indigenous fauna and flora and spectacular mountain and sea views. Fabulous views of mountains and wetlands complement the experience.  Golfers of all levels can enjoy a links experience at the 9-hole Simonstown Country Club, dodging penguins that live around the course, and spotting whales in season.

More about Youth Day

Formerly dubbed Soweto Day, Youth Day isn't just another date on the calendar; it commemorates the pivotal moment in 1976 when the Soweto riots erupted, sparking a wave of protests against the apartheid regime's educational policies. The government had ordered that all instruction in black schools be conducted in Afrikaans and the riots were the end of the straw for many people - an outcry against the discriminatory education system that perpetuated inequality.

On that fateful day in 1976, some 30,000 students from Soweto took to the streets in protest and weeks of unrest followed during which around 700 people died. The poignant image of 12-year-old Hector Pieterson, fatally shot by police, became a global symbol of resistance against apartheid's brutality.
