National Women's Day in South Africa
National Women’s Day is celebrated every year on 9 August. It is a special day that highlights ongoing issues faced by women, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, unequal pay, and access to education for girls. It serves as a rallying cry for continued progress and advocacy for women’s rights.
On a more positive note, Women's Day aims to celebrate women, femininity, motherhood, sisterhood, and more. Women bring a unique, nurturing wisdom to the Earth and hold all living things in their palms.
August holds a special place in our hearts as we remember the remarkable march of more than 20,000 women to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956. We remember the defiant spirit of women like Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams, who led the march against the oppressive extension of Pass Laws, designed to further suppress women, marking a pivotal moment in our struggle for equality.
The haunting silence of the women as they stood for 30 minutes, followed by their powerful anthem "Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’ Imbokodo!" (You strike a woman, you strike a rock), echoes the enduring strength and courage of South African women.
Women’s Month is not only a commemoration of that historic day but also a salute to the trailblazers of the women’s movement, dating back to 1913. Since its inception on August 9, 1995, National Women’s Day has seen significant advances in gender representation. Before 1994, women held a mere 2.7% of parliamentary seats. Today, women make up nearly 48% of our national assembly, reflecting a dramatic shift towards gender equality.
Fish Hoek is a unique destination for women who love the great outdoors, connecting with special family members or friends, and relaxing with great food and drinks.
