It is Your Human Right to Enjoy Seaside Cottages this March 2026

Posted on Thu March 12, 2026 in Upcoming Events.

Every year, as summer slowly softens into autumn and the golden light of March settles across South Africa, the country pauses. March is Human Rights Month in our country, a time when the nation reflects on the long and difficult road to freedom, dignity, and equality. Most people take a day off on Human Rights Day, 21 March, a public holiday commemorating how far we have all travelled as a nation.

Here at Seaside Cottages in Fish Hoek, we make time to remember, to tell the stories and to be gracious. Let's go back nearly seven decades ago ...

A Day That Changed South Africa

On 21 March 1960, in the township of Sharpeville, thousands of ordinary South Africans gathered peacefully outside a police station. They were protesting the harsh pass laws of the apartheid government—laws that controlled where Black South Africans could live, work, and travel.

The protest was calm. The crowd was unarmed. Yet within minutes, the atmosphere turned tragic. Police opened fire on the crowd.

Sixty-nine people were killed. Many were shot while fleeing. The victims included young people, workers, parents, and dreamers—people whose only crime was demanding dignity and freedom.

This moment, now known as the Sharpeville Massacre, shocked the world and exposed the brutal reality of apartheid to the international community. It became a turning point in South Africa’s struggle for justice.

Decades later, after years of resistance, courage, and sacrifice, South Africa emerged from apartheid and began building a new democratic society.

A New Republic and New Hope

Thirty years ago, in 1996, the country adopted the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, widely regarded as one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. At its heart lies the South African Bill of Rights, a powerful promise that every person in the country (regardless of race, gender, background, or belief) has equal rights and inherent dignity.

The theme for the 2026 Human Rights Day is “Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real.” This means that South Africa celebrates three decades of democracy grounded in freedom, equality, and human dignity.

Nelson Mandela said, “March 21 is the day on which we remember and sing praises to those who perished in the name of democracy and human dignity.”

“Every individual in every sector of society has the responsibility to remain a caring South African, never indifferent to the affairs and well-being of our country and its people.”

Human Rights is a Lifestyle

Human rights touch the simplest parts of daily life. We all have:

  • The right to live with dignity.
  • The right to speak freely.
  • The right to learn, to vote, to work, and to live without discrimination.

In South Africa, these rights also carry the responsibility to protect the dignity and freedom of others.

Experiencing Human Rights Day in Cape Town

In Cape Town, visitors and locals often step into history at some of the city’s most powerful landmarks and take a walk through South Africa’s story.

  • A ferry trip to Robben Island reveals the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years.
  • In the city centre, the District Six Museum tells the heartbreaking story of a vibrant community destroyed by forced removals during apartheid.
  • Nearby, the Iziko Slave Lodge explores how slavery shaped the early history of the Cape.

Across the city, Human Rights Day often sparks thoughtful gatherings and discussions.

Universities like the University of Cape Town frequently host lectures and panel discussions on justice, democracy, and the future of human rights. Cultural spaces hold film screenings and exhibitions that explore South Africa’s past and present.

For many people, the day is also about giving back - volunteering at community kitchens, supporting education projects, or working with organisations dedicated to equality and opportunity. Because human rights are not only remembered; they are lived.

Human Rights Day carries a powerful question for every South African: What kind of country do we want to build next?

Because decades from now, another generation will look back and ask: What did we do with the freedom we inherited?
