It’s Movember Month for Men Again!

Posted on Sat October 5, 2024.

November is synonymous with men, so Movember has a good ring to it. At Seaside Cottages, our men matter. We invite all men and their families to spend a weekend with us in November to celebrate Men's Cancer Month.

Did you know that Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide?

It is a play on words for the slang word for moustache, "mo", and "November".

Movember is more than just about facial hair; it’s a call to action to promote regular health check-ups, awareness of family health history, and healthier lifestyle choices. The name itself is a playful blend of "mo" (slang for moustache) and "November." While the moustache is the signature symbol of the movement, many participants support the cause in other ways too.

Seaside Cottages supports men in Movember.

There is only one rule: You must begin the month of Movember clean-shaven. Then, for 30 days, you must grow and groom your moustache - shaving other parts of your face, of course. Seaside Cottages has made up the second rule: book a weekend with us to grow that moustache beside the ocean!

Join everyone on social media platforms as they emphasize the movement, sharing their journey using the hashtag #Movember, and creating a global community united for men’s health. Ultimately, Movember is about changing the face of men's health—literally and figuratively—by using the moustache as a symbol to spark important conversations.

Fish Hoek joins this amazing annual global movement every November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges such as suicide prevention. The initiative encourages men to grow moustaches as a symbol of support, sparking conversations around early detection, treatment, and prevention of health problems that disproportionately affect men.

Run by the Movember Foundation, the event has become a massive global force, raising over $837 million since its inception and funding more than 1,200 projects across 20+ countries. By rallying men, known as "Mo Bros," to embrace the movement, the goal is to promote regular health check-ups, awareness of family cancer histories, and lifestyle changes to reduce preventable deaths. Women, called "Mo Sistas," also play a vital role by supporting and promoting the cause.

The Men’s Foundation states that in South Africa, “Prostate Cancer is the leading cancer affecting South African men, with a 1 in 16 lifetime risk based on the National Cancer Registry (NCR) 2017 figures. African men are over 2 times more likely to develop prostate cancer and more aggressive forms of the disease. Testicular Cancer cases have doubled over the past 10 years – known as the young man’s disease, reports of men in their 30’s and 40’s are being diagnosed.”
