How It All Began
Did you know that the Cape Town Cycle Tour began as a modest protest in 1978 for better cycling infrastructure in the city and has grown into the largest timed cycling event in the world? It was called "The Big Ride In" and was organized by cycling advocates Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann. Sure, there was resistance but this initial ride drew more than 500 passionate cyclists and planted the seeds for the race we all love to watch yearly – it is indeed a cultural phenomenon.
Look forward to the March 2025 Cape Town Cycle Tour and be part of the celebration of inclusivity and resilience. The event continues to break boundaries, drawing more than 30,000 riders worldwide annually – a unique blend of seasoned pros, weekend warriors, first-time riders, charity punters and several handicapped heroes.
The Route Showcases Fish Hoek and Beyond
The Cape Town Cycle Tour’s 109km route unfolds through the spectacular Southern Peninsula’s unbeaten scenery. Starting in the bustling heart of Cape Town, cyclists embark on a journey that winds through forested slopes, sparkling coastlines, Fynbos displays and some truly challenging climbs. It’s a chance to see baboons at play, dolphins surfing and seagulls bantering over bait from local fisherfolk. Make Seaside Cottages your base!
